Winston the bulldog reporter in bowler hat and suspenders

Winston was born in a Macon, Georgia animal shelter with two distinguishing traits: a nose that could find a dropped french fry at forty paces, and a profound personal objection to being lied to.

Welcome to Winston HQ, headquarters of the hardest-working bulldog in Georgia media. Meet the dog below, then shop his shelves: the products we use at home, test in our articles, and recommend when readers ask what to buy.

Shopping through Winston HQ is a free way to support Global Watchdog. The price is the same for you, and as an Amazon Associate we earn a small commission from qualifying purchases.

Chapter 1: The Beginning

Baby Winston as a puppy in the animal shelter

His journalism career began, as all great careers do, by accident. Adopted as a guard dog, Winston spent his first year filing, quite literally, by dragging them across the floor, complaints about everything: the kibble (stale), the mailman (suspicious), and, fatefully, a “miracle” flea collar he’d seen advertised on television.

Chapter 2: The Complaint Department

He chewed through three of those flea collars in a week. None worked. So he wrote his first exposé on the back of a pizza box. It was devastating. The pizza box was never the same.

Dr. Alan Wood found the pizza box, read the exposé, and hired him on the spot.

Chapter 3: The Rookie Years

Winston as a rookie reporter with notepad

That was fifteen years ago. Winston learned the trade the old-fashioned way: riding along, notebook in mouth, asking the questions nobody else thought to ask, mostly “but does it actually work?” and “says who?”

Chapter 4: The Watchdog

Since then, Winston has become the soul of Global Watchdog. He covers every beat: the scam, the hidden fee, the miracle cure that isn’t, the “one weird trick” that turns out to be eleven weird lies. His methods are old-school, follow the money, read the fine print, and when in doubt, sniff it. If it smells like nonsense, it usually is.

In the field, Winston is known for his wardrobe. Colleagues say he dresses for the story: a lab coat for health investigations, overalls for gardening exposés, a chef’s hat when the cookware industry needs a talking-to. Asked about it, Winston will only say a reporter should always look like he belongs, “otherwise the crooks clam up, and the good folks don’t trust you neither.”

Off duty, Winston enjoys long naps in sunbeams, short walks to nowhere in particular, and strong opinions about the mail. He does not care for: hidden subscription renewals, white text on white backgrounds, or anyone who is mean to cats. (He and Miss Kitty have an understanding.)

He has never lost a staring contest. Winston holds himself to a high bar, every story is sourced and checked before it runs. And when I get something wrong, I correct it openly instead of quietly editing it away. Winston’s job is to sniff out scams before they sniff you. Every investigation here is written so you can spot the red flags yourself.
