Americans are a very charitable people. 95.4% of households give to charity and we collectively gave $335.17 billion in 2013. Unfortunately with that much money in play, there are a lot of very greedy and dishonest people that do their best to con people out of money and then very little of the donations goes towards doing any good. CNN did a recent exposé to shed some light on these cockroaches of humanity. Here is a list of the 50 worst charities so if you have been donating to any of them I suggest you stop immediately. If you have donated to any unscrupulous charity I am sure you would be appalled to find out they are spending a very low percentage on their actual cause you supported. Now don’t get me wrong, there are also many wonderful national and international charities that do their absolute best to send every dollar to the cause they support. Here is a list of the 50 best run charities. Cause an Uproar is one of my personal favorites that are doing tremendous good to save big cats from extinction. I am not trying to get you to donate less just donate smarter. Make sure the charity you support is legitimate. Purrs N Paws is definitely legit and need your help. Here are three easy ways to donate today.

The reason I chose to speak about charities in the broader context is that Macon has some truly amazing people and groups right here in town. If you want to really make a difference you can do so with confidence right here in town. The Macon Volunteer Clinic , Loaves and Fish Ministry, and Big Brothers and Sisters are but three of many great organizations here in Macon that are truly making a big difference to many peoples lives on a daily basis. I am sure there are many others as well and I apologize if I did not include your group.
Today however I want to focus on helping animals and specifically cats. I am a huge animal lover. I am 50/50 when it comes to being a dog or cat person and have both. Animals are far more than companions. Studies have shown that people with animals tend to live longer and are happier. They comfort us at times when we are inconsolable.
They are loyal, always happy to welcome us home with excitement even if we just went to get the mail. They don’t judge us, you can be yourself at all times with them, they aren’t greedy or whiny except when it comes to asking for their favorite snacks ;). They help us relax, they rely on us and they also love us unconditionally. For people that think animals are incapable of complex emotions like love, sadness, joy, or grieving you are simply wrong. If you have ever seen a mother elephant actually shed tears or try to bury her dead baby I simply cannot understand how you could possibly think animals do not have emotions. The only traits animals seem to lack are the baser human ones like lying, cruelty, hate, jealousy, greed among others.Their emotions and the rationale behind them might not be quite as complex as those of humans but they certainly have a wide range of emotional responses and comprehension than some people imagine.
Macon Purrs and Paws
Here in Macon there are a number of amazing people trying to save animals. Most of these groups focus on dogs. Today I happened to read an article by my friend Bill Knowles on the 11th Hour magazine entitled Macon Purrs and Paws Plight and Predicament. I encourage all of you to read the link and go to page 13 of the online issue to read his entire article. His column was the reason I chose to add my voice to this chorus in the hopes of making more people aware that Purrs and Paws is in a very precarious situation with the imminent loss of their current building. Certainly the groups that work to rescue dogs also need your help as well but since Purrs and Paws is the main group focused on cats, if they close for good this would be very tragic for Bibb county.
They desperately need urgent help to not only take care of the cats under their care now but also to buy a new facility so they can continue to rescue our feline friends for years to come. At the beginning of this article I warned you about unscrupulous charities and I hope none of you have been donating to any of the top 50 worst charities. But if you want to make a real difference in your hometown and be assured that 100% of your donation will actually be spent on the cause you support now is the time to consider donating to this fantastic group of people here in Bibb county because they need your help yesterday. If you can’t afford a money donation they need supplies like food, litter, and many other items. They also have a lot of wonderful cats in need of a forever home that you can view on their Facebook page below. Please consider sharing this story to any and all of your animal loving friends all over the planet and help Purrs N Paws continue to save lives. Thank You
