My newest monster. Meet Lexi!

Hey there, new Yorkie puppy owner! Congratulations on adopting one of the cutest little bundles of joy on the planet! Yorkshire Terriers are playful, spunky, and just downright adorable, but caring for them can be a little intimidating for inexperienced pet owners. Don’t worry, though, I’m here to help you out!

First things first, let’s talk about training your new furry friend. Start training your Yorkie as soon as possible, and remember to establish yourself as the pack leader. Set boundaries and rules for your puppy to follow, but don’t be too harsh on them. They’re still babies, after all! Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Crate Training: Your Yorkie is a tiny little thing, and crate training can help with their potty training and give them a safe place to snooze when they’re tired. You will need a lot of pee pads until they are fully trained.
  • Positive Reinforcement: When your Yorkie does something good, reward them with treats, toys, and praise. Positive reinforcement is always better than punishment, which can lead to fear and aggression.
  • Obedience Training: Consider enrolling your Yorkie in obedience classes to help them learn basic commands like “sit,” “stay,” “come,” and “heel.” It’ll be a great bonding experience for both of you!
  • Consistency: Consistency is key when it comes to training your Yorkie. Stick to a regular schedule for feeding, potty breaks, and training sessions, and your pup will pick up on the routine in no time.

Now, let’s talk about feeding your little Yorkie. These pups have unique dietary needs, so it’s important to choose high-quality puppy food that’s specifically formulated for small breeds. Look for a brand that uses real meat as the first ingredient and avoid foods that contain fillers, artificial preservatives, or added sugars. And remember, portion control is important! Your Yorkie should be fed a small amount of food, spread out over two or three meals per day.

When it comes to exercise, your Yorkie is a pint-sized ball of energy! They don’t need a lot of space to get their exercise, though, so short walks and indoor playtime are perfect for keeping them active and entertained. Squeak toys, Puzzle toys, like treat-dispensing balls, are great for mental stimulation, too!

Another thing to consider is socialization. Yorkies can be a bit shy and may need some extra help getting used to new people, places, and experiences. Consider taking your pup to puppy socialization classes or exposing them to new environments in a controlled and positive way.

Now, let’s talk about grooming your Yorkie. These little guys have long, silky coats that require regular brushing to keep them looking their best. But don’t worry, grooming can be a fun bonding experience for you and your pup! Daily brushing with a pin brush or slicker brush is recommended to prevent tangles and mats, and you may need to give your pup regular haircuts to keep their coat manageable. And don’t forget to keep their ears and teeth clean, too!

Toothbrushes make great and safe chew toys

One important thing to keep in mind is that Yorkies are prone to dental issues, so it’s important to start a dental care routine early on. Regular teeth brushing with a toothpaste specifically made for dogs can help prevent tartar buildup and keep your pup’s teeth healthy.

  1. Finally, it’s important to be prepared for potential health issues that may arise. Yorkies are prone to certain health conditions, such as hypoglycemia, collapsed trachea, and liver shunt. Make sure you have a trusted veterinarian who is familiar with these conditions and can provide the appropriate care if needed.

Caring for a Yorkie puppy can be a lot of work, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. By taking these additional factors into consideration and providing your new Yorkie with love, care, and attention, you can ensure that they will be a happy and healthy companion for years to come. With the right care, your new furry friend will be a loyal and loving companion for many years to come. As the famous dog trainer Cesar Millan once said, “A dog is a teacher of love; where dogs are concerned, you can’t fool them.” So go ahead, and embrace the love and joy that your new Yorkie puppy brings into your life!
